National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)  SBIR / STTR Program

Program Description

NIEHS SBIR and STTR grants help small businesses develop innovative and commercially viable products or technologies to translate and communicate environmental health research to improve public health.

The NIEHS SBIR and STTR program uses a combination of research, technology transfer, and communication strategies to aid the mission of NIEHS.

Research and training areas include:

  • Exposure assessment tools such as sensors and monitors, computational and informatics-based tools and methods
  • Technologies or methods for evaluating environmental health and safety of engineered nanomaterials (ENM)
  • Biomonitoring technologies and biological response markers of exposure and response
  • Improved or expanded assays, testing methods, computational approaches and model systems for predicting or screening compounds for toxicity
  • Intervention technologies to prevent or reduce exposures to environmental stressors
  • Educational materials or tools to support understanding of environmental health sciences related literacy and citizen science endeavors
  • Superfund Hazardous Substance Basic Research and Training Program (SRP) - Detection and remediation technologies for contaminated sites
  • NIEHS Worker Training Program - Advanced Training Technology (ATT) products for the health and safety training of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) workers, emergency responders, and skilled support personnel
